Mahalia Jackson Collection, The - #44

Jackson Mahalia

1989 Deja Vu 1/1/89

Stuff that I remember hearing as a kid.  This woman was black Gospel to the white world during the 1950's and the 1960's, we knew little else.  She is and was a national treasure.

Purchased: 8/1/91 - J&R $400.00

1987 Epic

Purchased: 1/1/90 - Columbia House $9.99

Dangerous - #308

Jackson, Michael

1991 Epic 1/1/91

Micahel's last successful American album before the shit hit the fan, before he was accused (and convicted in the media) of child molestations.  His career just about ended here.  The album carries a number of song that were single hits and it is up to Jackson's earlier stuff.  The critics didn't like it though because it is the same as his critically acclaimed Thriller album.  No new directions and no artistic growth got the critics not liking this on but I do.

Purchased: 2/1/92 -  $14.99

Rated: 3

Thriller - #305

Jackson, Michael

1982 Epic

The very best of Michael Jackson, made him a rich man, spawned about 6 singles and one of the best selling albums of all time.  Its really good but not a 5

Purchased: 9/1/91 -  $13.99

Rossiter Road - #86

Jamal, Ahmad

1986 Atlantic 2/1/86

Ok, good, but not my cup of Jazz.  Jamal is noted as excellent worldwide, this music known by Ingo, a German guest of Helton's, (See Van Morrison's "Poetic Champions Composer")

Purchased: 1/1/88 - Gift $14.99

At Last - #701

James, Etta

 MCA-Chess

A huge disappointment.  Looking for great Jazz that she does and got a poor technical album of pop

Purchased: 2/29/00 - J&R $7.99

Travel Without Meaning - #559

Jamiroquar

1996 Work 1/1/96

Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal Grammy 1997.  Good pop but 1990's mix, it sold but it doesn't seem like it will be any way a classic.

Purchased: 3/2/98 - CDNow.Com $8.49

Rated: 3

Breakin' Away - #450

Jarreau, Al

1981 Warner Bros 1/1/81

A good talent from Milwaukee.  Saw him in person times again while there.  A talent lot in popular music.  The voice deserves more albums that this producer intrepid.  The album is good, even producers cannot destroy this talent.

Purchased: 1/1/87 -  $12.99

Rated: 3

Much Afraid - #556

Jars Of Clay

1997 Essential 1/1/97

Best Contemporary Gospel Album 1997.  Doesn't sound like any gospel that I know.  Seems to be a 70s rock and roll album.

Purchased: 3/2/98 - CDNow.Com $8.49

Rated: 3

Crown Of Creation - #33

Jefferson Airplane

1968 RCA 1/1/68

This album is a record for all time.  The best of JA and one of the better of the 1960.  My favorite "Lather" was 30 years old today.  I started to listen to the some when I was 21 and it is still a favorite at age 51.

Purchased: 11/1/90 - J&R $9.99

Greatest Hits ( Ten Years and Change 1979-1991) - #514

Jefferson Starship

1999 RCA 1/1/91

This is Starship.  An identity w/ the 60's that has struggled to arrive to the contemporary for 30 years.  They can not be marred as 60's Icon but they struggle still to identify themselves as always..  Some of these songs I do not know of because I was not listening in the 70's and 80's but I like them still.  There new music is unfortunately like it was produced by a machine, stamping one out after the other. A lot are similar.

Purchased: 9/15/97 - Columbia House

Pieces of You - #511

Jewel

1994 Atlantic 1/1/94

Good solid new music that I try so hard to find.  She is a Grammy winner and she deserves it.

Purchased: 9/15/97 - Columbia House

Rated: 4

Spirit - #696

Jewel

1999 Atlantic 11/17/98

A poet who one year was found sleeping in her car and the next year was at the top of the charts.  This woman adds poetry back into popular music.  She is a successor to Joni Mitchell and others.  May her career last for 50 years

Purchased: 12/14/99 - BuyMusic.com $12.49
