Electric Ladyland - #452

Hendrix, Jimi

1983 Reprise 1/1/83

Hendrix has not been duplicated.  One of a kind, rock music played like it was jazz, but it is not.  There has been only one and this is his masterpiece.  Disk two is better than disk one.  Dylan had his hand in this production.  Hendrix plays the song better than Dylan does.  I had this double album in vinyl too. Volume 2 has a different photo

Purchased: 1/1/89 -  $24.99

From The Original Decca Masters - #350

Holiday, Billie

1988 MCA Records

A superb collection and excellently remastered from old tapes.  It can only get better when the technology improves.  Holliday had a hard live and it defeated her but she sang to the heights of heaven.

Purchased: 1/1/87 - Columbia House $10.99

Lady In Satin - #226

Holiday, Billie

1958 Columbia 1/1/58

This is a sad sad album.  The women sounds beautiful and far away and broken.  It is one of Helton's favorite.  It is one of the saddest for me.

Purchased: 1/1/87 - Columbia House $9.99

Quintessential Billy Holiday, Vol. 03 1936-1937- #237

Holiday, Billie

1988 Columbia

Columbia has remastered to keep the woman's music the treasure that it is.  We are lucky to have this music and are lucky to have her.

Best Of Jennifer Holiday - #536

Holiday, Jennifer

1991 Geffen 1/1/91

One of the best female vocals of all time is "And I Am Telling You".  Full out music, the type that made Whitney Houston, was practiced by Ms. Holiday first and best in Broadway's Dream Girls.  I saw her in "Arms to Short To Box With God.  Excellent stage.  Her career should have been more prominent.  The rest of this album is pop filler.  This woman is caught between rock and roll, soul and miserable pop.  Bought this in Arizona

Purchased: 10/12/96 - Best Buy $10.99

Stormy Weather - #633

Horne, Lena

1977 Hallmark 1/1/77

If you take a liking to Lena Horne you will love this one.  All of the songs that she does well are here.  She is more an Icon of the changes of fortune for American Blacks than she is a singer.  But a singer she is too.  Great phrasing that outdoes others very very well.

Purchased: 6/25/99 - J&R $4.99

Stormy Weather - #639

Horne, Lena

1995 Double Play

Not a quality recording but it is Lena at her total range.  This woman oozes sex appeal.  There is a come hither and deal with me demand in her voice. Some of these songs sound as though they were recorded from the radio, others sound as though they are recorded from scratchy vinyl masters.  They are treasures

Purchased: 7/2/98 - J&R $7.99

Mount St Helen's & City Of Light - #294

Hovhaness, Alan

1993 Delos 1/17/92

A good contemporary work of classical music.  Less boom and thunder than one might expect but descriptive of its subject.  Minimalist with the obvious influence of Philip Glass.  Has he not influenced contemporary symphony music too much?  I think so.

Purchased: 4/11/94 - Columbia House $16.98

Very Best Of George Howard - #534

Howard, George

1997 GRP Records 1/1/97

More lite jazz.  How do I know if it is good or not when I consider all lite jazz to be a folly, and insult to the music.  Elevator music made in the studio for the consumption of the brain dead and / or for making a mood to sell or - - -

Purchased: 12/16/97 - Columbia House $19.98

Sicilian, The Original Motion Picture Sound- #75

Like this soundtrack.  Smooth, relaxing yet dramatic.  Like the use of the rings bells.

Amtrak Blues - #221

Hunter, Roberta

1980 Columbia 1/1/80

This star resurfaced in the late 70's or early 80's after melting into History.  She was recognized world wide in the twenties as a Jazz star, more popular in Europe than here.  Time made her a regular human being and she went into nursing in the 40's.  An urge to sing brought her back to us and we are thankful.

Purchased: 1/1/87 - J&R $10.99
