Black And Blue Original Broadway Cast- #197

Original Broadway Cast

1989 CHG 1/1/89

A production that was small – this is a good thing – Broadway overdoes it so many times.  But this production was not that original.  Not a bad thing either because it was an enjoyable evening at a TKTS – the half price ticket booth ticket -  The GREAT thing here was to see so many under recognized blues singers.  Ruth Brown the foremost of them all.  Check out the album cover when you hear this.  The 3 women were greats.

Cats Complete Original Broadway Cast - #330

Original Broadway Cast

1983 Geffen 1/1/84

It’s a mighty musical about nothing at all.  I guess that is why I don’t like it so much – having seen it 5 or 6 times on the stage. Broadway can be so powerful and entertaining yet this seems to be a mediocre musical with only THE BIG NUMBER to carry it to greatness.  Great concept though and that’s why Asian tourists have been filling the seats for over 16 years.  I just bugs me that it is the longest running musical ever.  It is a spectacle but artistically it is a void overall.  Theatrically the set (the whole theatre is a junk yard) and costumes and the one big song save the day.

Chorus Line, A - #216

Original Broadway Cast

1975 Columbia 1/1/75

The perfect musical about musicals, the perfect Broadway play about Broadway plays, the perfect production. It ran and ran and ran and closed as it was the longest running Broadway musical of all time.  It has since been overtaken by several of the “spectaculars” but this will always hold the hearts as the best.  I saw it 6 times, with friends and family over a period of about 15 years.  I wish it were still playing.

Crazy for You - #174

Original Broadway Cast

1992 Angel 3/2/92

This recording presents this music as Gershwin wrote it – for Broadway – good to enjoy it with it’s correct musical intentions even tho the pieces never were presented in one show.   This music has entered the American culture.  Wonderful production too.  The performers danced on all things elevated.  One grand production number after another.  It deserved to be the long running hit it was and deserves to be remembered as Gerswhin as Gerswhin wrote it.

Evita  #627

A very good Broadway musical but not very good as popular music.  There is little to sign along with here but it is a wonderful operetta.

Forty-Second Street - #427

Original Broadway Cast

1980 RCA 1/1/98

The movie was more fun, more entertaining.  That aside, this was real entertainment, no matter how boring it was.  I took Dad and Ardith to it and they both fell asleep.  Still, there were show stopping numbers here and they show on the album.  Changed my original rating from a 3 to a 4 because of the show stopping number.

Guys and Dolls New Revival- #7

Original Broadway Cast

1992 RCA Victor 5/3/92

This musical was called the quintessential American Musical.  And it is and was.  The 1992 production got a front page review on it’s opening and 8 other section cover feature stories during it’s several year run.  I saw it twice and would have again if it had not closed.  Wonderful music holds up under this CD.

Jelly’s Last JamOriginal Broadway Cast - #403

Original Broadway Cast

1992 Mercury 6/2/92

It was wonderful to see Gregory Hines on stage again – Sophisticated Ladies being the first time.  This man takes over a stage.  You see nothing else when he is performing.  Musically this is enjoyable, the story was good but the play is not resurrected when one listens to this album
